When I first started taking care of my beard I had no idea where to start with all the options out there. All seemed like what I wanted but I knew there had to be a difference I just didn't know what it was. So now I am going to quickly break it down to help you!
All these products will condition and help give you control over your beard. How much condition versus how much hold depends on what you use. I will break them down in order for you.
Beard Oil- Oil conditions the best. It gets deep into the hair and skin. This is great at any stage of beard growth as it helps keep it healthy, fuller and thicker. It will help with beard itch at the beginning and keep dry skin under control as it gets longer. Since the beard hair is healthy it tends to be more tame but won't give you any hold or let you shape it. I would highly recommend using oil along with butter or balms giving your face that perfect balance of hydration and conditioning.
Beard Butter- Butter is a great conditioner with a little bit of hold to it. It will condition the hair using plant based butters like Jojoba Butter, Macadamia Nut Butter, Avocado Butter, and Hemp Seed Butter and has just a touch of beeswax to give you a little hold. This tends to be a better option as the beard gets longer because it will let you shape it but also keeps it soft.
Beard Balm- Balm is the next step in the shape and hold game. When your beard is shorter it needs a bit more help to get it all going one direction. Balm is just beard butter with more beeswax to give you that extra hold to help train those pesky rebel short hairs.
'Stache Wax- This one is simple... just wax. This will give you that rock solid hold but the downside is it doesn't condition the hair. Most use this for shaping just the stache as it needs the most hold while using other products on the beard itself
So there you have it, the break down to help you chose what is right for you! Remember using Oil alongside another product is going to give you the best results
